XL Games has delivered an announcement capable of mending years of emotional scar tissue for veteran ArcheAge players. Executive Producer Yongjin Ham confirmed that upcoming action MMORPG ArcheAge Chronicles will launch under a traditional Buy-to-Play business model. Crucially, when the game enters Early Access, the in-game cash shop will be completely absent — not even vanity microtransactions will be present at launch.

The development leadership insists that competitive progression, endgame gear, and player status must be earned purely through open-world grit, dungeon clears, and combat mastery rather than wallet depth. If a cash shop is introduced post-launch, its inventory will be strictly confined to visual cosmetics and quality-of-life conveniences with zero influence on player power or the economy.

Equally significant is XL Games' decisive break from publisher control. The studio officially confirmed it will self-publish ArcheAge Chronicles globally. In an unexpected structural split, XL Games transferred the legacy ArcheAge IP alongside the mobile spin-off ArcheAge S to Kakao Games, deliberately retaining independent ownership and creative control of Chronicles. The move aims to cut out bureaucratic corporate layers and establish an unvarnished communication line with Western gamers.

Community members will not have to wait long to verify these promises, as the title joins the upcoming Steam Next Fest lineup:

  • A free playable demo runs from October 19 to October 26, 2026;
  • Testers will venture into the iconic contested zone of Diamond Shores;
  • Four distinct combat paths will be available: Warrior, Ranger, Berserker, and Mage;
  • The demo focuses on core dynamic combat and public PvP skirmishes, with complex housing and trade runs intentionally reserved for the Early Access launch.

For a player base that witnessed the downfall of the original sandbox under labor point potions and predatory regrading charms, a clean Buy-to-Play slate feels almost surreal. Whether Jake Song's team can truly rewrite history will be put to the test the moment swords clash across Diamond Shores.
