ArenaNet, in partnership with 2weeks studio, has announced Guild Wars Afterlife — the first major downloadable content expansion for the 21-year-old original classic in nearly two decades. Slated to launch on January 13, 2027 for PC and mobile platforms, the expansion introduces a procedural roguelike dungeon called The Unformed, letting players break all franchise taboos by drafting skills from any profession in the game.

The Isle of Xotecha and Nightmares in the Mists

The storyline summons veteran adventurers to the isle of Xotecha, hidden deep within the Mists. Guarding this surreal realm is the Order of the Moonless Night, tasked with guiding lost spirits toward closure before unresolved grief twists them into monstrous Nightmares. Now the order is overwhelmed: an elder has vanished, lost souls are flooding the dreamscape, and the secretive Cult of Odran has begun tampering with the afterlife itself.

Players enter the fray with their existing characters. Each expedition peels back new narrative layers while confronting ancient golems and chaotic nightmare hordes. Memorized routing will not save you here.

The Unformed: Procedural Roguelike Dungeon Runs

Instead of static instances, Afterlife introduces the dynamic, ever-shifting depths of The Unformed. No two descents play out identically. The Mists constantly reweave the layout, randomizing lush jungles, cenotes, floating ruins, mob encounters, and boss battles. Fast adaptation is king.

The real game-changer strikes at the heart of original Guild Wars deckbuilding: the skill-drafting system. After selecting an initial loadout, adventurers draft new abilities as they clear rooms. Crucially, draft choices are not restricted by your primary or secondary profession. Elementalists slinging Warrior shouts, Ranger traps, and Monk prayers on a single action bar are now fully viable. The old rulebook is gone.

Metaprogression, Henchmen, and Release Details

Solo wanderers are not left stranded: runs can be tackled alongside classic AI henchmen or in full co-op with friends. Progression splits across two distinct tracks:

  • Run-specific boons and upgrades designed to fuel deeper subsequent runs;
  • Permanent rewards and cosmetics that carry over directly into the main world.

Pre-purchases are live on Steam and official storefronts at a discounted price of $23.99 / €23.99, rising to the standard $29.99 at launch. Early buyers immediately receive the ancestral-themed Vestments of the Order costume in-game. Playing Afterlife requires the base Guild Wars Reforged client.
