Wolcen Studio revealed Wolcen 2 at the Future Games Show during gamescom 2026 on August 26, close to two years after it shut off the first game's multiplayer for good. The isometric dark fantasy ARPG targets Steam Early Access on PC in 2027, with a full launch planned for PC and current-generation consoles. A first closed playtest is already live through the Wolcen Studio Playtest Program.

Co-op is where the sequel answers for its predecessor. Multiplayer now runs on a listen-server peer-to-peer setup, meaning one player hosts the session and the studio's infrastructure sits outside the chain entirely. Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem lost its servers on September 3, 2024, forcing owners to convert online characters for offline play and wiping out co-op with no replacement. Studio president Bogdan Oprescu drew the line between the two himself, saying the team learned "how it feels when access to something you care about is taken away."

The technology changed as well. The original ran on an aging CryEngine build that the studio eventually admitted could not sustain a live-service lifespan without a rebuild from scratch. Wolcen 2 starts over in Unreal Engine 5, reusing production pipelines the team developed on Gods, Death & Reapers, its free-to-play extraction RPG currently in alpha.

Character building keeps the shape players knew. Weapons unlock skills instead of classes, and modifiers, specializations and a wide passive tree bend those skills into a melee mage, a spellblade, a gunslinger or something harder to name. Shadow Form is still both the panic button and the damage spike. Past the campaign, two systems carry the loot chase:

  • Conquest, where factions keep fighting over power and territory across dynamically assembled battlefields.
  • Tower of Wonders, a climb built around specific rewards, with player input on the difficulty and outcome of each ascent.

The story picks up years after the original. Anathea, the goddess holding the Rift to the demonic Void closed, is mortally wounded, and the Warlord, a shadow-spawned bastard child of the Shadow God, gets dragged out of exile into a prophecy that promises salvation and demands sacrifice. His companions accept the price. He looks for a way around it. Solo and four-player co-op both cover the full campaign.

None of that erases the record. Wolcen began as a 2015 Kickstarter called Umbra, pulled in over $400,000 from more than 11,000 backers, launched in February 2020 into collapsed servers and a wall of bugs, then wound down in 2024 with promises unfinished; the new FAQ still carries a line for backers whose physical rewards never showed up. A different team is making the sequel, a point the studio raises unprompted. Hands-on impressions from Cologne describe hits that land soft and enemies that soak far too much damage. Early Access is more than a year away, which leaves Wolcen Studio one currency to spend until then: playtests it visibly acts on.
