About System Requirements

VRChat isn't a demanding game by the usual standard โ€” the minimum bar is modest, and how hard your rig actually works has far less to do with the platform itself than with which world you walked into and how many other people's avatars are standing next to you. That's a fundamentally different requirements model than a game with fixed content, where a rig that breezes through an empty hub can start dropping frames the moment thirty strangers pack into a crowded club.

The i5-4590/FX 8350-class CPU floor exists because the platform has to run several unrelated jobs on the processor simultaneously: physics for dozens of strangers' PhysBones components (tails, cloth, hair), network sync for every avatar in the instance, and your own full-body tracking data โ€” all of that lands on the CPU before the GPU ever gets to draw a frame.

The GTX 970/R9 290-class GPU floor reflects the fact that scene complexity isn't fixed the way it is in a normal game โ€” polygon count and material load depend entirely on who else happens to be in the room with you, not on a level designer's fixed budget. A weak card that handles a solo session fine can hit its ceiling fast the moment a packed event fills the instance.

4 GB of RAM is the stated minimum, and in practice it feels tight: the client caches world and avatar assets locally so it doesn't have to re-download them on every repeat visit, and on constrained memory that caching shows up as stutter during instance teleports rather than a clean load screen. Of the roughly 21.5 GB of disk space the platform asks for, only about 1.5 GB is the application itself โ€” the rest is that same content cache, which keeps growing the more worlds and avatars you've visited.

VRChat doesn't publish separate recommended specs โ€” both the Steam page and the official support article list only a single minimum tier. Treat those numbers as a floor for a mostly-empty instance, not a comfortable target for busy public events.
