Sean Murray and Hello Games have rolled out milestone update 7.0. The monumental patch transforms the deep vacuum of space into a thriving playground featuring spacewalking, guild warfare, and player-owned space stations.

A decade ago, the launch of No Man’s Sky served as one of the gaming industry's most notorious cautionary tales regarding unbridled hype. Today, it stands as arguably the greatest redemption saga in gaming history. To commemorate its ten-year milestone, the Guildford-based studio has unleashed Update 7.0, dubbed COSMOS — a free expansion that fundamentally reinvents how players interact with the space between worlds.

Leaving the Transit Corridor Behind: Space Finally Comes Alive

For years, the void between star systems in No Man’s Sky functioned primarily as a picturesque highway connecting procedurally generated planets. Explorers engaged in warp jumps, snapped dazzling screenshots of nebula clouds, and blasted the occasional asteroid cluster for fuel, but rarely had a compelling reason to linger. Hello Games has finally tackled this long-standing design quirk head-on.

With COSMOS, the void is packed with intrigue. A routine orbital scan upon warping into a star system now unveils a multitude of dynamic points of interest:

  • Space Hulks: Colossal derelict starships drifting through orbit. Scavengers can harvest rare technologies and salvage either from the cockpit or by stepping directly out into the vacuum on a spacewalk with their jetpacks.
  • Orbital Outposts: Freely suspended installations staffed by system inhabitants offering tailored missions and lucrative bounties. Travelers should tread lightly, however — several of these outposts have succumbed to terrifying infestations of biological horrors.
  • Contested Asteroid Belts: Dense mineral fields of rock and ice now harbor precious crystal matrices. Gathering these riches requires haste and firepower, as rival alien scavengers actively hunt for the same lucrative haul.
  • Stellar Reconnaissance: System stars, long treated as untouchable distant backdrops, can now be approached and investigated up close for scientific breakthroughs.

Claiming the Stars: Space Station Ownership and Alliances

The update also fulfills one of the community's longest-standing requests: claiming space stations. Travelers can now take ownership of these orbital hubs, completely overhauling their interiors and architectural exteriors.

Furthermore, these captured outposts serve as the headquarters for Alliances — the game's newly introduced clan framework. Travelers can band together, establish shared command centers, and vie for supremacy across persistent galactic leaderboards measuring alliance membership, claimed stations, and charted star systems.

Zero-Gravity Architecture and a Walk Down Memory Lane

Builders are no longer tethered to planetary soil. Players can now anchor sprawling settlements onto massive asteroids or construct fully modular, free-floating orbital citadels in open space with zero ground support required.

To celebrate a decade of continuous development, COSMOS introduces a dedicated Anniversary Expedition functioning as an interactive living museum. Spread across 40 milestone stages — each commemorating one of the 40 major free updates shipped since 2016 — the expedition takes players through nostalgic mechanics while unlocking a developer logbook packed with behind-the-scenes trivia and candid retrospectives.

Alongside the digital release, Hello Games has officially opened its brand-new merchandise portal featuring apparel and collectibles crafted in collaboration with community partners.

No Man’s Sky Update 7.0 «COSMOS» is available now as a free download for all owners of the game across PC, consoles, and VR.
