The closing moments of the RuneFest 2026 livestream delivered an industry bombshell. Just as hosts prepared to sign off, Jagex unveiled the next evolutionary leap for their 25-year-old franchise: a standalone flagship MMORPG currently operating under the working title RS4. Built from the ground up on Unreal Engine, the project completely leaves behind the tick-rate limitations and legacy architectural baggage of previous iterations.

The origins of the fourth installment emerged entirely by accident. The project began life as Shadows of Ashenfall, an intended expansion for the in-development survival spin-off RuneScape: Dragonwilds. As prototyping advanced, the team's mechanics, dynamic world-building, and high-fidelity fidelity outgrew the boundaries of secondary DLC. Recognizing the momentum, Jagex leadership greenlit the project as a full-fledged fourth mainline MMORPG, engineered to modernize the realm of Gielinor with contemporary visual fidelity and fluid mechanics.

Mindful of community scars left by the 2012 Evolution of Combat transition, Jagex moved quickly to quell player anxieties regarding ecosystem cannibalization. RS4 is being developed by a dedicated, autonomous team within the studio. Zero staff, funding, or live-service support are being diverted from either Old School RuneScape or modern RuneScape. While full commercial launch remains a few years away, developers committed to bringing players into co-design conversations from the earliest playable milestones.

The mainline franchise also walked away with transformative roadmaps across every active branch:

  • RuneScape Reignited — a historic clean-slate relaunch of RS3 going live on December 2, 2026, introducing quarantined fresh-start economies, remastered onboarding, and pristine high scores;
  • OSRS Fall Milestones: The Fractured Archive launching on October 20, 2026, unforgiving Hardcore Worlds opening on November 4, the desert metropolis of Menaphos, and Fairytale Part III;
  • Official Animated Series: a narrative production spearheaded in collaboration with Lyrical Media and prominent creator Charlie White (MoistCr1TiKaL).

Curious adventurers can watch the cinematic reveal teaser and register for upcoming early community playtests directly on the official RuneScape 4 reveal hub.
