Final Fantasy XIV is heading for its most aggressive mechanical modernization in over a decade. Square Enix has launched pre-orders for the next massive expansion, Evercold, locked in for release on February 23, 2027. Beyond raising the level cap to Level 110 and kicking off the Godless Realms Saga, the expansion systematically retools core combat, introduces two new jobs, adds a bridge raid difficulty, and confirms launch on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

Two new jobs: Bastion tank and Zephyr ranged DPS

Leading the expansion roster are the Bastion and Zephyr jobs. Bastion enters the fray as a dedicated Main Tank wielding the formidable Skyltborg fortress-shield, specialized in stalwart frontline defense and strict positional aggro control. Zephyr steps in as a physical ranged DPS armed with a heavy crossbow, prioritizing slippery mobility and precise armor-piercing volleys from safe range.

Notably, both newcomers are engineered exclusively for the new Evolved combat mode. The team bypassed legacy two-minute rotation constraints entirely, tailoring their kits directly to dynamic action combos and punchy job identity without dragging forward a decade of baggage.

Combat system split: Reborn vs. Evolved modes

The rigid two-minute burst meta has been the single biggest complaint across the community. With Evercold, director Naoki Yoshida is addressing the issue head-on by splitting the combat framework into two toggles: Reborn Mode and Evolved Mode. Reborn preserves the familiar static timings for conservative veterans, while Evolved breaks open skill rotations to prioritize fluid, reactive gameplay.

Alongside the combat split comes customizable action animations, letting players personalize the visual execution of their general and job abilities. The Armoury system is also expanding, removing inventory bottlenecks when swapping between multiple combat disciplines on a single character.

The Icebound Fourth and non-linear narrative

The Godless Realms Saga takes the Warrior of Light across the frozen expanse of the Icebound Realm of the Fourth. Instead of traditional open plains, players will explore titanic realmships adrift in the cold: Naglfar (Water), Hringhorni (Fire), Sessrymnir (Earth), and Skiðblaðnir (Wind), anchoring around the hub cities of Fargarth and Hjartadunur.

Breaking long-standing franchise dogma, the main scenario is discarding rigid linear progression. Following an introductory prologue, players can freely choose the order in which they tackle regional story threads and boarding operations. Zero forced rails. To keep exploration challenging regardless of chosen pathing, an automated content balancing engine will dynamically scale encounters to match current character levels.

High-end PvE shift: Fierce difficulty and Evangelion raid

High-end raid progression finally bridges the cavernous gap between trivial Normal duties and punishing Savage encounters. Evercold introduces Fierce, a brand-new eight-player difficulty tier aimed directly at mid-core groups seeking real coordination checks without committing to grueling prog schedules.

In a staggering crossover reveal, the upcoming 24-player Alliance Raid series has been christened EVANGELION - Ghosts of Desire. To eliminate raid fatigue, Alliance Raids will now be split into two distinct wings. Hardcore combatants also gain access to the Gauntlet of Power, a sequential gauntlet pitting teams against up to five dungeon bosses back-to-back.

Seasonal gear, dungeon chocobos, and early access

Gearing is transitioning toward a modern seasonal model, introducing distinct Seasonal Adventure Gear tracks for casual play alongside dedicated Raid Reward Gear for high-end enthusiasts. Meanwhile, chocobo companions are stepping beyond open-world duty: their training framework has been overhauled, granting players the ability to summon their chocobo directly into dungeons.

Early Access kicks off on February 19, 2027 for all pre-orders. The Digital Collector's Edition features the Valhallar Odin mount, the Entreat Crystal emote, and an exclusive Crystal Skyltborg arm for the Bastion.
