Playable Worlds has a date at last. Stars Reach, the sandbox MMORPG Raph Koster has been building since 2018, opens in Steam Early Access on August 18, 2026. The studio paired the July 30 announcement with pack pricing and a guided demo walkthrough narrated by Koster himself.
Three tiers cover the entry:
- Firstlight โ $29.99 for the base game.
- Voyager โ $49.99.
- Cosmonaut โ $79.99.
The upper two stack on cosmetics and early unlocks for a pair of upgraded tools, though nobody has seen an itemized list yet.
The hook is what survives after you log off. Cloud-native servers hold every planet, asteroid and settlement in a single persistent galaxy, and player actions leave scars: flatten a mountain, reroute a river into a desert, torch a forest. Progression skips classes entirely, so a Wayfarer can settle into exploring, crafting, reporting, politics or fighting, or juggle all of it.
Day one covers multiple planets, crafting, combat and player trade. Two years of alpha fed in an expanded character creator, reworked combat and wildlife migrations that turn nastier the longer they run unchecked. The bigger swings come later โ PvP and factions are held back for 1.0, and further down the roadmap sits a galaxy-spanning hive mind capable of devouring entire worlds.
First the servers need a beating. A Server Slam load test kicks off next week, and a Discord community event on August 2 walks newcomers through their opening hours. Playable Worlds reached this point via Kickstarter, layoffs, a hunt for extra funding and a total progress wipe in July. In a little over two weeks, the sandbox pitch meets a paying audience.
