Playable Worlds, led by industry veteran Raph Koster, has launched the major Making Waves content update (Patch 8.9.0) for its galactic sandbox MMORPG Stars Reach. The patch fundamentally overhauls exploration by granting every character swimming and diving capabilities, introducing dedicated mountaineering gear, and letting cartographers monetize their planetary survey data. The update also doubles sniper rifle firepower and enforces concrete physical borders for player-run settlements.
Conquering the Elements: Swimming, Pitons, and Cartography
Bodies of water no longer pose impassable roadblocks for explorers. Every traveler can now freely swim along the surface and dive underwater without skill prerequisites. For players looking to turn traversal into a competitive edge, the update adds the Orienteering profession. Progressing through this ranger branch boosts underwater movement speed, eliminates movement penalties on steep hills, and unlocks specialized climbing tools.
Scaling cliff faces now demands genuine planning. Hanging motionless on a sheer rock wall no longer restores stamina, forcing climbers to manage their reserves carefully. To avoid catastrophic falls, mountaineers craft Climbing Kits at Field Fabricators. Deploying a kit anchors the climber directly into the cliff face, allowing stamina to regenerate safely mid-ascent. Players can also equip Traction Cleats to temporarily prevent slipping on treacherous inclines.
Exploration now feeds directly into the player-driven economy. Utilizing Cartography Consoles, players can imprint their surveyed planetary data onto Blank Data Chips. A completed physical map records surveyed topography and active personal waypoints, retaining its integrity for 10 hours of active display. These snapshot maps can be traded or listed on town markets, allowing newcomers to bypass hours of painstaking manual reconnaissance by purchasing ready-made survey chips.
Tactical Combat: Strategist Calls and Doubled Sniper Firepower
Squad play takes a decisive leap forward with the introduction of the Strategist leadership specialization. Armed with a Leader Staff, strategists call out focus targets in real time. Marking an enemy within 40 meters triggers an eight-second countdown overhead. For the tactical call to succeed, at least half the squad must land direct hits before the timer expires. Damage-over-time ticks and companion attacks do not count toward the threshold, demanding coordinated burst from the entire team.
Heavy weapons received extensive balance passes to match fast-paced firefights. The Sniper Rifle's base shot damage has been doubled, and shooters can now move while charging up shots. Snipers also gain access to Spotter deployable drones that trigger explosive snares or defensive shields against flankers, alongside the Predation execute trait. Meanwhile, Grenade Launchers gain a Gravity Well fire mode that pulls clustered enemies into blast zones.
Colonial Sovereignty: 256×256 Town Borders and Packed Homesteads
Settlement governance now operates within concrete territorial confines. Newly chartered towns claim a defined zone of 256 × 256 meters centered on their original drop beacon. Local civic laws, tax rates, and zoning restrictions apply vertically across the entire map column, extending from the deepest subterranean caverns to the skies above. As the municipal GovBot levels up, the border steadily expands, eventually granting planetary jurisdiction at maximum rank.
Housing mechanics have expanded in lockstep with civic boundaries. Builders can now purchase 29, 37, and 45-meter cubic modular kits to extend existing homestead footprints upward or outward. Crucially, the update debuts the Homestead Packup feature. Players relocating across worlds can now condense their entire multi-room structure, crafting tables, and storage chests into a single portable container, redeploying their complete base layout onto any vacant lot without tedious rebuilding.
