Funcom has officially outlined the upcoming roadmap for Dune: Awakening, headlined by the announcement of a massive free expansion titled Blood and Ice. Scheduled to launch on December 1 across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, the update flips core survival mechanics by sending players to the frozen north of Arrakis. Alongside the frosty new frontier, the studio is tackling top community demands: an offline solo mode, character copying, and full cross-play across all platforms.

The Polar Sink: Freezing Temperatures and Ice Harvesting

The cornerstone of the expansion is the Polar Sink, a dedicated survival zone packing roughly 35 hours of fresh progression. Surviving here requires an entirely different playbook. Scorching heat and dehydration are replaced by bitter cold, rendering desert cooling tech obsolete. Players must craft insulated survival gear, regulate their internal body temperature, and gather local crafting components to push deeper into the wastes.

The region consists of two contrasting biomes: the tundra and the heavily fortified ice cap. The tundra serves as the staging ground for wealthy water shipper cartels who aggressively defend their outposts against trespassers. Breaching past their lines leads to the coveted ice cap. Harvesting pure ice provides a vital operational advantage back at camp: ice blocks cool down overheated base machinery, significantly speeding up crafting throughput. The expansion also introduces new vehicle attachments, augments, and specialization traits to refine endgame builds.

Offline Solo Play, Character Transfers, and Unified Cross-Play

Beyond new map objectives, Funcom confirmed release dates for three long-awaited quality-of-life systems. Offline play arrives first: starting in November 2026, single-player mode will function entirely without an internet connection, shielding solo survivors from server drops and network hitches.

January 2027 will roll out character copying and platform parity. Players will be able to replicate their established multiplayer avatars into single-player worlds without forfeiting their hard-earned gear. On PC, copied characters can also be transferred to supported private or self-hosted servers with appropriate permissions. Concurrently, full cross-play will link PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S players in shared lobbies, finally tearing down platform silos.

No-FOMO Cosmetics and the Water Crisis Event

To keep future expansions completely free, Funcom is introducing an optional cosmetic storefront. The store will bypass predatory time-limited rotations in the long run: while initially launching with a rotating selection, the entire skin catalogue will eventually remain permanently accessible to prevent artificial FOMO. The debut cosmetic wave features authentic film outfits timed alongside the theatrical release of Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Three this December.

In-game events are also becoming a permanent fixture, supported by a dedicated tracker tab in the main menu. Following the ongoing "The Scourge" outbreak event, Funcom will roll out "Water Crisis" shortly after Blood and Ice drops. Players will battle rival factions over shrinking water reserves to secure exclusive weapon patterns and survival rewards in both solo and co-op play.
