Elder Scrolls Online Drops Quest Markers for New Rumors System on September 28

ZeniMax Online is rolling out Update 51 for The Elder Scrolls Online on September 28, 2026, and the headline addition strips away something the MMO has relied on since launch: the quest marker.

Rumors, the new system arriving with the patch, hands players scattered clues instead of a waypoint and a checklist. Associate Design Director Jason Barnes framed the goal as reviving an old-school scavenger-hunt feel, pushing players to actually read the clues and connect them rather than follow a glowing arrow across the map.

It isn't entirely trackless, though. Rumors get their own tab inside the Quest Journal, separate from regular quests, and every unsolved mystery still comes with a hint pointing toward a starting location.

Three tiers set the difficulty curve. Whispers reward players who simply pay attention. Plots demand more deduction. Conspiracies are, by the studio's own admission, genuinely tricky — the Nowhere Vault Conspiracies in particular got a warning from the design team.

Finishing a Rumor isn't just for bragging rights. Players walk away with consumables, set gear, gold, and — for some entries — upgrade material for the Prowler's Amulet mythic necklace.

Update 51 also opens the Nowhere Vault the same day, a puzzle-first solo challenge that trades combat for room-by-room riddles. Getting in requires a Wondrous Nowhere Key, first earned at the tail end of Season One's Thieves Guild storyline; since the keys trade freely through guild stores, players who'd rather buy one than farm it have that option.

The patch itself is arriving a week later than ZeniMax originally planned. A wave of Xbox-wide layoffs this summer, touching roughly 3,200 roles across Microsoft's gaming division, hit ZeniMax Online alongside other Bethesda-adjacent studios. Game Director Nick Giacomini confirmed the new date in an open letter and said the Crimson Veldt trial and the next phase of class rebalancing are now sliding into January 2027 alongside Update 52.

Solo versions of the Moon Hunter Keep and March of Sacrifices dungeons aren't part of this launch — those arrive with Season Two on October 21.
