Grimrain combines three things the genre rarely puts together: skills that rise through use instead of classes and levels, crafting as an equal half of progression, and a PvE world with no PvP pressure. The games below were picked on those grounds rather than on how they look. Project: Gorgon and Wurm Online run progression on the same principle — you become what you practise — while Old School RuneScape set that standard long before either. Embers Adrift and Monsters & Memories sit closer on pacing and on what they charge for: group PvE, slow travel, and monetisation that sells convenience rather than power. None of them repeats Grimrain; each answers a similar question its own way.
